Thoughts on Christmas
For some people, this time of year can feel quite isolating. It’s like everyone is excited about Christmas but you. Like many aspects of life, some people really look forward to events and love to celebrate, while for others, comfort is found in wishing for “hermit like” approach. Whether it’s birthdays or Christmas, there seems to be something about the pressure of celebrating a “special” day, when you genuinely don’t feel like the day will be worth all the pressure.
Christmas in particular can be challenging. It is a day that carries many layers and meanings, and these can differ significantly from one person to another. The season often brings underlying values and beliefs to the surface—things that, in day-to-day life, may remain quietly in the background. Christmas can connect to our views on religion, family, belonging, and our broader philosophy of life. It may raise questions about faith, identity, connection, and whether we feel we truly belong. For many, these intersections can make the season feel complex rather than comforting.
Why not take a few quiet minutes to reflect on how you feel about Christmas? Simply acknowledging what is present can sometimes be a helpful first step.
I wish everyone a seasonal, festive winter holiday, in whatever you choose to approach it.
